What is a powertrain warranty vs. a bumper-to-bumper warranty?

When purchasing a new vehicle, the warranty is one of the most important pieces you could ask about. The dealership should provide you with paperwork to look over the warranty so you can see what is covered and what is not. With a powertrain warranty, you should get coverage for the transmission and engine. However, dealerships may change the coverage or only offer coverage for certain repairs for a limited time.

With a bumper-to-bumper warranty, you are covering what's in between the bumpers, basically. This could include electrical system, audio, A/C, and more, but again, you should check with the dealership to make sure what is covered before signing anything. Bumper-to-bumper warranties are more comprehensive and therefore do not last as long. You typically will only see a 90-day to 180-day warranty coverage with these.
